Mother's Day
Mother’s Day is a day of celebration in
honor of mothers, maternity and the influence of mothers in society. It
symbolizes the purity of a mother's love. It is observed on various days in many
parts of the world, most commonly in the months of March, April or May. It is
the invention of an American girl named Arna Jarvis, daughter of Ann Jarvis.
During the civil war in America, Arna Jarvis tried hard to improve sanitation
which helped to save thousands of lives on both sides of the conflict. Arna
Jarvis passed away in 1905. After her death, in 1907, on the 2nd Sunday in May,
Arna invited her friends to her home in remembrance of her mother's life. On
that very occasion, she declared her idea a day of national celebration honoring
mother's 'A Mother's Day'. Later on, in 1914, the then American President
accepted the idea and announced the day as a national holiday for celebrating
Mother's Day. Since then most of the countries of the world including Bangladesh
observe Mother's Day on the 2nd Sunday of May. On this day, cakes, flowers,
greeting cards, mugs etc. are gifted to mothers as Mother's Day gifts. To
highlight the day programmes on discussion & culture are held profoundly.
TV and radio stations air special programmes and newspapers publish special
feature in honour of the day. Indeed, the day represents the significance of mothers.
It reminds us mothers can not be compared to anybody.
